5th Annual Legacy Award Luncheon

The 2011 recipient of Bluegrass Alliance for Women’s Legacy Award is Dr. Mary Smith Stowe of Franklin County,

the first female president of Kentucky State University. 

 

“Dr. Smith Stowe has spent both her professional and private life devoted to the promotion of education for girls and women of all ages,” her nominator wrote. “… at a point in life when many have retired from service, Dr. Smith Stowe continues serving and perhaps more importantly guiding and influencing less senior members of the organizations with

which she is involved. She continues to teach and touch countless members of the Frankfort Alumnae Chapter and members of our mentoring programs for middle school and high school girls.”

 

The retired educator has a long record of achievement in academia including scholarship, teaching, and professional

activity in education at various levels. She has served on boards of directors and worked with local high school aged

girls in education and activities designed to prepare them to be highly functional and productive members of their community. 

 

Delta Sigma Theta in Frankfort held a program called Delta Academy during her terms as president. The program

engaged high school age girls Members of the Academy were students from Frankfort High School, Franklin County

High School and Western Hills High School.

 

She has served on the boards of the Frankfort Chapter of United Way, Frankfort/Franklin County Community Education, Frankfort Salvation Army, and the Capital City Museum Board.

 

Professionally, she has served on several boards or commissions, including the Commission on Colleges for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the national board for state universities and Land Grant colleges, and the board of National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.

 

She received the University of Kentucky College of Education Hall of Fame Award and has been inducted into UK’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. Under Gov. Paul Patton she served as chair of the Kentucky Commission on Higher Education and Efficiency.
